About the project

Here you can find information about the project background, context, key questions, outputs etc ...

Project description

Research will be substantiated by the participation of experts from the fields of humanities and intercultural studies providing their expertise and mentorship, by anthropological-sociological video research and by interactive media and website communication.

The final results – the proposed goals of the project will be:

  • an interactive and inter-media web page that will contain updated results of the theoretical and practical research and will keep track of the development of the project,
  • a publication that will publish theoretical contributions of the experts, thoughts and opinions of the participants and the whole breadth of the conducted research along with the complete results of the project,
  • a video-documentary and other shorter video creations that will be the product of the research-based video workshops taking place in the countries and cities of the partners participating in the project.

The project will be executed in the year 2007 and will end in the first half of the year 2008 with presentations in all the participating partners’ countries.

Project Idea
Image
We are presently witnessing the proliferation of negatively polarised social structures, such as the appearance of  new conservatism, which is increasing in Europe and elsewhere. This can be observed in post-communist countries, which tend to revert to left-wing values unacceptable to contemporary capitalism.

There are also many revisionist right-wing histories of World War II now being published, attempting to rehabilitate Quislings and Fascists, not only in Slovenia, Croatia, Serbia and Slovakia, but also in Germany and the United States. There are also increasing signs of xenophobia in traditionally open societies such as Holland and France, while religious-based conflicts between Muslims, Christians and Jews continue to develop on a global scale.
Despite – or perhaps as a consequence of – the new logic of globalisation, individual attachments to local environment, family, education and religion do not diminish or disappear. The question arises: Is the increase of the new conservatism, xenophobia and religious fundamentalism reflective of a basic human or social need for identity and a sense of security and belonging to one’s own community? Or is it the consequence of social engineering by manipulative religious teachers, politicians, and elders who exert influence on the development of children and young adults.

Project objectives

Image

Objectives - short term

  • To probe and collect opinions, experiences and standpoints of young people regarding religious and cultural tolerance, co-existence and co-operation with those who have different cultural backgrounds and religious beliefs.
  • To explore differing opinions about specific ethnic and religious conflicts through theoretical discussion and analysis.
  • To examine, and shed light on the problems of specific conflict situations, to analyse their context and aetiology, and, consequently, to consider possible lines of resolution.
  • To address issues of religious and cultural difference in Europe at present through discussion and debate, publication and, particularly, through the use of documentary film, and, on this basis, to raise the awareness of inter-ethnic and inter-religious social contexts and issues.
  • To contribute to the formation of adequate approaches and methods for intercultural communication and cooperation that would, crucially, be of practical use in everyday learning situations.

Methodology of work

Image

Approach

  • Preparation/introduction: setting up theoretical frames of the project through e-communication and definition of concrete problems in specific areas.
  • Organising the exchange of the young collaborators - video researchers in the project-participating cities - and organising round tables with young participants in the project, academic experts, etc.
  • Video research in participating cities where, besides the general questions and research themes, more specific research will be done on ‘problems’ that are present in specific surroundings.
  • Evaluation and editing of publication on theoretical/empirical issues.
  • Presentation of  the final outcomes of the project - video documentary and publication.

Target groups and audience

Image

Target groups

The primary target group is young people, aged 15 – 30. Young people of this age will also prevail in the part of the group that will actively participate the project. The opinions and perspectives of this target group are particularly important because they provide the potential way into finding possibilities and opportunities for a different approach to addressing problems concerning religious and cultural tolerance in the future. We have chosen this target group on the basis of our action-oriented and therefore future-oriented approach to the difficult and sensitive issues we are addressing in this project. Our focus on youth pragmatically acknowledges that the issues can only be resolved over a relatively long period of time.
